Curriculum

We redesigned our curriculum in 2010 and we are very pleased with the results. Learning is based around topics which are carefully planned. Skills, taught in English and Maths, are then developed further in other areas of the curriculum. We have a very broad, balanced and creative curriculum and we believe greatly in the value of outdoor learning.

Here is what Ofsted Inspectors said about our curriculum:

“The recently restructured curriculum offers a good range of learning experiences. Newly developed topics promote cross-curricular skills effectively.”

“There are good opportunities for art, music and physical development.”

“Currently, the school is focusing upon the development of outdoor learning opportunities, making the most of the extensive grounds.”

“Personal, social, health and citizenship education has a positive impact on pupils’ personal development.”

“External partnerships contribute well to extending pupils’ learning.”

“A good range of special events, visits, enrichment activities and good extra – curricular provision make a significant contribution to pupils’ learning and enjoyment. They contribute also to their good spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.”

(Ofsted, October 2011)

Class Curriculum Webs

Curriculum Webs

Please take time to look at your child’s class topic web for this half term. These will give you some guidance as to the type of activities and experiences they will be taking part in over the coming weeks. Theses activities may vary depending on how the class interests and knowledge develops and will be differentiated for different talents and abilities. If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to speak to your class teacher.

Key stage 1 and 2 follow the Big Maths and Big Writing programs .

Phonics and Reading Skills

At St Helens we put great emphasis on the teaching of phonics and use the Letters and Sounds approach. Children in Foundation and Key Stage 1 take part in daily reading and phonic activities suited to their needs. We use a variety of reading schemes for guided reading and children take home books from a banded selection incorporating fiction and non-fiction texts.
