THE RE-OPENING OF ST. HELEN'S IN SEPTEMBER

Jul 17, 2020, 9:25 AM

Dear Parents/Carers,

THE RE-OPENING OF ST. HELEN’S IN SEPTEMBER

As I’m sure you are aware, the Government have announced that all children must be back in school from September and hence we are re-opening to all children in years 1 to 6 on FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 4TH (new reception children will receive their start dates in a separate letter).

It will be lovely to see all the children again!

As mentioned in the last email, your child/children will be spending Friday September 4th in this year’s classroom with this year’s teacher. Then from Monday September 7th they will be in their new classroom with their new teacher:

We are very aware that our pupils will have had very different experiences whilst in lockdown and also will have different feelings about coming back to school. The adults are ready to support them in whatever way they need. We also have our counsellor available to give advice. If there is any information that you would like to share with us about your child’s experience of lockdown, please send an email to their new teacher via the year group email address:

Year 1 – year1@st-helens.southend.sch.uk – Mrs Bishop and Mrs O’Byrne

Year 2 – year2@st-helens.southend.sch.uk – Miss Anderson and Mrs Marshall

Year 3 – year3@st-helens.southend.sch.uk – Mrs Conyard and Mrs Pease/MrCurtis

Year 4 – year4@st-helens.southend.sch.uk – Mrs Fisher and Mr Gibson

Years 5 – year5@st-helens.southend.sch.uk:Mrs Hall and Miss Appleyard

Years 6 – year6@st-helens.southend.sch.uk:Mrs Richards/Mrs Miller

Please be aware that the school experience in September will be quite different for your child compared to the school they left behind in March, before lockdown. The children will be organised into class bubbles and they will not be mixing with children from any other classes. They will have different start and finish times and different ways to enter and exit the school – see later grid for this information. They will have a designated inside and outside space for their class.

Please be aware that at all times, THE HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELL-BEING of pupils, staff and families has been our number 1 priority when planning for our re-opening and that there is a detailed risk assessment in place.

In order to minimise the risk of infection to your child and family and to our staff, the following decisions have been made in line with the Government’s guidance:

  • The children will be organised into a class bubble with a maximum of 30 children in it.
  • The children will remain the same in each bubble and where possible, the 2 adults within each bubble will also remain the same.
  • Each bubble will have their own dedicated inside and outside space and there will be no mixing of children at any time of day from different bubbles – this is in line with Government guidelines in order to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Playtimes and lunchtimes will be staggered and the children will be outside as much as possible as current scientific thinking is that this will reduce the risk.
  • Cleaning will obviously be a very important part in minimising risk and hence cleaning will be on-going during the day and there will be a thorough clean of each classroom every evening.
  • The children will be reminded regularly about personal hygiene e.g. hand washing, use of tissues etc.

BECAUSE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE BUBBLES AND PREVENTING THE RISK OF INFECTION, WE WILL NOT BE RUNNING BREAKFAST CLUB OR AFTER SCHOOL CLUB INITALLY IN SEPTEMBER – WE WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN WE CAN RESTART THESE CLUBS.

Of Parents/Carers we ask:

  • That if any of your family are showing symptoms of the virus, please inform us, follow the test and trace process and keep your child at home for 14 days.
  • Only 1 adult should drop off and pick up your child at any time but of course, we understand it might be a different adult on the authorised list that you have given to us – any changes, please let us know.
  • Please support us by sticking to the drop off and pick up times and locations.
  • There will be markings on the floor – please stand behind the line outside your child’s classroom and do not come close to the classroom door.
  • Please do not stay to chat with other families (not our normal policy I know!) and leave the school grounds as quickly as possible.
  • It will not be possible for you to talk to the teacher or any member of staff face to face, if you do need to communicate with us, please either do it by email to the normal office email or by phoning the school.

It would be helpful if you could share some of the information within this letter with your child as it will help them to feel more at ease especially if they know who their adults are and which classroom they are in. The new teacher will also be sending a PowerPoint presentation sharing information about their next class.

In line with government guidance, we have produced a new behaviour code which we will be sharing with the children on a regular basis and this is on our website.

PERSONAL DETAIL UPDATES:

Please inform us by email if there are any changes to:

  • your child’s health
  • your phone numbers
  • your address
  • the adults who are allowed to pick up your child

MEDICATION: Please remember to ensure that your child returns with an inhaler and epi-pen if needed.

SCHOOL LUNCHES:

We will be offering the grab a bag option only which we ask you to book online. If your child is in Year R, 1 or 2 they will still be entitled to a universal free school meal. All other year groups – please pay through the School Gateway unless your child is entitled to free school meals. Please can you send a water bottle in with your child on a daily basis as we will not be using the water fountains.

SCHOOL UNIFORM: Children will need to wear proper school uniform again.

READING BOOKS: Please return any school reading books that you might have at home in a sealed plastic bag – if this could be before the end of term, it would be really helpful – thank you!

PERSONAL POSSESSIONS: The children must not bring into school pencils, pens, pencil cases – they will be provided with their own set for use in school. Also no unnecessary personal items such as toys etc can be brought to school either.

TRAVEL: The Government have asked us to encourage families to walk or cycle to school wherever possible. If your child will be wearing a mask when travelling to school, Government guidelines state that if it is a disposable mask, they need to drop it into a lidded bin and then go and wash their hands. If they will be re-wearing their mask, they need to have a plastic bag to put it into and then go and wash their hands thoroughly.

And finally, thank you to all the families who have worked with us during the lockdown period and the partial re-opening from June. It is crucial that we continue to work in partnership with all our families to keep everyone in our community safe. We are doing our very best in school to minimise the risk to your child and we hope that we can rely on you to follow Government guidelines when not in school. Then hopefully we can all keep as safe as possible – thank you!

Have a lovely summer and we are looking forward to seeing you all again in September.

Kind regards,

Elizabeth Mouchel

Headteacher
